Women’s volleyball: Slow but steady

Energetic. If you had to describe the AQ Women’s Volleyball team in one word, that’s it.

According to Head Coach Ryan Campbell, this team is going through it this season. After losing all of last year’s senior starters, the team is taking one game at a time this season. Through growing pains, injuries, mistakes, challenges, and a lack of consistency through sets, these Saints are head-on in the face of adversity.

“All these girls work their tail end off,” Campbell said. “Nobody places blame on one another. We’re all here to make each other better. They’re relentless.”

And that they are. With injuries hitting the team hard early this season, the team is becoming more and more united as a whole. However, they still lack consistency. These players come out strong in the first set and begin dwindling into sets two and three. After a 5-14  record in non-conference play and a 2-4 record in conference, there is still a lot of work to do.

“We just want to place well in the conference, whatever that may be,” Campbell said.

Right now, the Saints are fifth in the conference right behind their hometown rival, the Cornerstone Eagles, who rank 23rd in the nation.

The Saints played the Eagles at home on Coach Bo’s Court last Wednesday, September 21st at 7:00 pm. This was also the annual “90’s Night” Fundraiser put on by the team. Lots of promotions were put on including t-shirts, a best-dressed competition, 90’s music, slap bracelets and performances from the AQ Dance and Cheer teams. Tiktok Star Frankie Lapenna even made an appearance for the fans.

After a hard-fought effort, the Saints dropped the first 3 sets to lose by scores of 25-23, 25-22, and 25-17. The Players Of The Game were Abbie Perkins and Jennifer Johnson. The Saints came ready to play, but in the end, Cornerstone came out victorious.
