Year after year, time after time, over and over again the state of Michigan will hear how the Lions are a new and improved team. This year there is nothing different when we hear that idea spread across at which we wonder, huh will they actually be good this time around?
Last season the Lions started off as one of the worst teams in the NFL, with a losing record of 6-1 to begin the season. The season was over before it felt like it began with this team. Most Detroit Lions fans had already given up on them, if they hadn’t already from seasons prior, or they started to root for the opposite teams just in irony of knowing the Lions weren’t going to pull off a win. After all hope was lost, the Lions went to surprise the entire nation after pulling off 3 wins in a row. Suddenly the fans came crawling back to support their once loved Lions. Again this idea moved forward within the season as they continued to push the end of the season winning 6 out of 8 more season games. The fans and team had started a new hype train that mostly everyone in Michigan wanted to now hop on. Holding a final record last year of 9-8, it brought a lot of excitement back into everyone that supported them from the beginning.
This hype train didn’t end there, this team was still being supported through preseason this year and didn’t disappoint fans when they carried a 3-0 record winning every game of preseason. Defeating the other two cats: the panthers and the jaguars, along with beating the Giants, the excitement of the team and fans have already been built to assume that the Lions will be winning the Super Bowl.
To add into the excitement the Lions played their first real season game playing against the previous Super Bowl champions the Kansas City Chiefs, most people going into this game would either root for KC or root for the Lions knowing KC would win. However, this team and the hype train didn’t get shut down. Instead, the Lions pulled off a fantastic win with a score of 21-20.
This year’s Lion’s team has given us a solid start for us to believe they are rolling hot this year, however, with many more games to come and a scary inconsistency, we will have to keep watching them throughout this year to see how they play out within their conference and possibly into playoffs.
