Story by Opinion Editor Zoebelle Bean
This week, Aquinas was polled on whether or not more dances should be considered for the year. Currently, the college only has one dance, the Spring Formal. While these opinions don’t cover the entire campus, a wide range of students were questioned, and many presented their ideas why or why not more dances for our school should be considered.
One anonymous Senior says, “having only one school dance makes the demand for that one dance really high. If we have limited tickets, that means everyone wants to go, but some can’t. With more dances and less demand, there will be more options for students who want dances.”
More dances would allow students to avoid the inevitable ticket sell-out within days of the tickets going on sale. This would make students feel less left-out if they miss the sale or need to wait to buy them. Yet, are more dances really the answer? Dances could foster relationships, but some students are hesitant to go in the first place. Not everyone is inclined to go to a dance.
An anonymous Senior noted how, “I’m so introverted that dances are super stressful for me. I literally have not been to a college school dance yet and I’m close to graduating.”
The first step would be to get people interested. The more interest and support from the community, the better idea the college has of whether this is a good investment. While dances can be fun and entertaining, the college first needs to consider the risks of adding another dance, which could take priority over all else.

Allison Kaatz, a Sophomore, claims, “I think more as an option would be nice, but I understand cost restraints.”
Besides cost restraints, risking offering more dances might not be beneficial for all and money could be lost if more are offered. However, the emotional gain over the money loss might be worth it in the long run.
Several students claimed dances, such as one for Homecoming, would be “a great opportunity to welcome new students,” and more dances would “create more opportunities for cultivating community amongst students at Aquinas.”
Among some of the opinions of the students, suggestions for dances were made, such as the Homecoming dance mentioned above and a “Winter Whirl” during the snowy season.
An anonymous Senior notes how, “I think dances are a good way to shake up the stress of school and give the students a night of fun and good times.”
Dances are equally stressful, costly, yet fun. While a dance could be a good way to round out the year, it may not be the answer if interest from the students and funds are low.
