Going into week 7 of the NFL, the Detroit Lions have made it clear that they aren’t fumbling this season. They have started this year facing off against the previous Super Bowl champions which they defeated, and with only 1 loss into this season, they are holding a record of 5-1 going into the next game against the Baltimore Ravens.
In previous years, the Detroit Lions have been in the gutter around this time in the season. Not performing to the city’s expectations and often a not thrilling run for the Super Bowl title. However, this year, they have been leaving failure off the table. After week one of besting Kansas City, they dropped a close match with the Seattle Seahawks in overtime with a score of 37-31. This has been the only loss this team produced and since the start of the season, they haven’t kept a game within reach for their opponents.
Facing off against the Atlanta Falcons in week three, they didn’t so much as let them score a touchdown, besting these birds 20-6. Following week four, they took down the Green Bay Packers early into the game and ripped a hole into the cheeseheads scoring nearly most of their points in the first half. This made it tough for the Packers to fight back, leading their next win 34-20. Week five brought the Carolina Panthers, at which the Lions bested or matched the Panthers in all four quarters. With a score of 42-24, the Panthers weren’t close to matching after the 28-point first half by the Lions. Finally, going into week six they took down the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with a score of 20-6. Clearly, without Brady, there wasn’t much offense and the Buccaneers weren’t able to score a touchdown against the Lion’s defense.
It is clear to see that although we may have had some doubts about our Detroit Lions, they are here this 2023 season to play. They are currently leading the NFC North and competing for a chance at the playoffs this year. This would be the first chance the Lions got since 2016 at the playoffs, and with Jared Goff leading this team, we may see it happen this year. Although the season is still fairly early, it is a pleasant change of pace for the Lions to compete well with other teams this season.
