Story by Zoebelle Bean, News Editor
Following a series of complaints and internal turmoil, The Saint has undergone a staffing change this year. After receiving negative feedback on articles and content, a staff member has stepped down from their position and other staff members have received new positions in their wake. The changes which ensued are thus: the previous News Editor, has officially resigned from their position as News Editor. Zoebelle Bean has assumed this role, with Christopher Curry joining the team as the new Opinion Editor.
Here is what Editor-In-Chief Mark Musgrave III has to say about our new hire; “Chris is a Junior, Philosophy Major, and commuter student who will bring a great perspective to the team. Be sure to give him a warm welcome!”
These changes are meant to ensure that the Saint continues to publish and present news to the student body as it was originally intended to when it was founded: for the campus, based on the free press and intentional, fact-based reporting. The staff has agreed that, though the resignation was unprecedented, these changes are necessary for upholding the standards of journalism. Keeping the paper campus-centered, mindful of inquiries and input, is what makes the paper strong.
The mission statement of the paper is as follows: “To serve the Aquinas College community in bringing news, entertainment, and athletic stories to the campus that can help the campus grow in their experience with the College and the surrounding area. We wish to meet the wants and needs of our readers and continue to improve each issue’s content and design. Finally, we wish to have our staff and contributors grow in their knowledge of journalism.”
Not only that, but the newspaper is reconsidering its position on campus and reevaluating where it will continue to grow in journalism. The entire staff is new this year, including the Editor-in-Chief. Thus, in the coming months, the paper expects to intensify training, improve writing techniques, and seeks to expand the staff to accommodate the large quantity of quality stories that is anticipated as the year grows on. One idea on staff expansion includes adding a marketing specialist to obtain sponsors for fundraising.
The Saint will continue to focus on the ongoing effort to respect and encourage discourse among students and staff and use these as a foundation for future stories.
