Story by Marshal Acosta

The Aquinas Men’s basketball team continued its early conference play season against a team from our neighboring state below us in the Indiana Tech Warriors. It was a defensive battle all game with both teams shooting a low percentage 34% each from the field. However Indiana Tech won the game by drawing fouls on Aquinas which led to them shooting a solid 82% from the free throw line and eventually led to them getting the win over Aquinas 66-54.

The first half was very entertaining as Aquinas was only down three points with the score being 31-28 in favor of Indiana Tech. The Saints got off to a solid start in the beginning of the game with buckets from the brother duo of Donovan Brown Boyd and Devon Boyd to take a 13-5 lead about six minutes into the game. However in the blink of an eye Indiana Tech re-took the lead 16-15 and Aquinas retaliated with little run of their own, scoring seven straight points to re-take the lead 22-16. Indiana Tech woke up a little bit on offense as they went on a 15-6 scoring run to take the lead 31-28 heading into halftime.

Coming into the second half the Saints were looking to get off to a good start offensively and they got some help from Freshman Sam Mendendorp after he tipped in a missed shot to bring the score to 33-30 in favor of Indiana Tech. Unfortunately the Saints just were not able to get anything going offensively shooting 30% from the field in the second half and less than impressive 0-8 from behind the three point line.

Indiana Tech was not much better shooting 31% from the field in the second half but the difference was the Warriors attempting 18 free throws and making 14 of them which earned them a 72% free throw percentage for the second half. Unfortunately for Aquinas they only attempted eight free throws in the second half which was 10 less than Indiana Tech and it really hurt the Saints going forward because Indiana Tech would maintain their lead the entire rest of the game with their highest lead reaching 19 points. It was too much for the Saints to come back from as Indiana Tech would go onto win 66-54.

The Warriors were led in scoring by Brady Titus and Nigel Martin who each scored 14 points while the Saints were led by Andrew Larson who scored 13. The Saints will be back in action at home on Wednesday night against non-conference opponent Grace Christian at 7 p.m.
