As the winter break unfolded, the Aquinas Men’s Basketball Team, holding a record of 6-4, both within and outside the conference, setting the stage for an eventful season. The team not only held its ground in the conference with a balanced record of 3 wins and 3 losses but also ventured beyond, facing off against formidable opponents in Florida.
The Florida stint saw the Saints engage in hard-fought battles against Warner and Webber International. Despite their best efforts, victories eluded them, with scores of 68-60 and 89-63, respectively. The closeness of these games attests to the team’s tenacity and competitive spirit, even in the face of challenging matchups on the road.
Upon their return from the Sunshine State, the team faced an even tougher challenge in the form of Western Michigan, a NCAA Division 1 team. The encounter resulted in a daunting 127-71 loss, yet this setback served as a catalyst for a rejuvenated team spirit, marking a turning point as they approached the dawn of 2024.
The new year ushered in a series of victories for the Saints, winning three out of four conference games. Their triumph began with a stellar performance against UHNO, culminating in a scoreline of 86-74. Notably, two players, Brown-Boyd and Andrew Larson, reached new heights with career-high numbers – 30 points for Brown-Boyd and 23 for Larson.
Continuing their winning streak, the team secured victories against U of M-Dearborn (89-79) and Concordia (81-61). Each game brought its own challenges, but the Saints, fueled by determination and skill, prevailed. The victories were a testament to the team’s resilience and ability to adapt, a quality that bodes well for their future performances.
Even in the face of adversity, such as the loss to Cornerstone, individual players shone brightly. Jared Lary, in particular, delivered a standout performance, achieving a career-high during the game. Reaching 20 points, leading the team in points against Cornerstone.
In essence, the Aquinas Men’s Basketball Team’s journey through winter break and into the new year is marked by a rich tapestry of experiences – from challenging matchups to triumphant victories and individual achievements.
