Going back into 2023, the Aquinas Women’s Basketball team played their first game of the season. With a close game to start off the season the saints take a strong 62-62 win against Shawnee State. The next few games were tough and hard fought, but unfortunately they were unable to land a win when facing division one Western Michigan, (RV) IU-South Bend, and Governors State. These ballers bounced back though when facing Great Lakes Christian heating up with an outstanding win of 93-62.
Starting up conference games, it began with a couple hard battled games against Siena Heights and Rochester losing both games by a difference of more than 10 points. This led into the next big win, the first conference win, against Cleary dusting them 75-59. However, the win streak was reset after losing a matchup against (RV) Indiana Tech and following that with a loss to St. Francis (III.). We then took down another conference team when sliding past Lourdes beating them 74-72. Closing down on the year the Aquinas Women’s Team worked hard, but fell short when facing Lawerence Tech and division one Purdue Fort Wayne. Finishing 2023 out, however, the women’s team snuck away with a win against Goshen 72-70.
Starting the new year, these saints extended their win streak by 2 when toppling two conference teams early in the year. Starting with a win against University of Northwestern Ohio by over 30 points, finalizing a score of 82-51. They continued that momentum into the next match up against UofM- Dearborn, a team that just couldn’t keep up, losing to our saints 72-59. Matching up throughout January began to become unsuccessful despite the tough efforts our saints put into it. They then went on a loss to win ratio of 5 out of 6 losses. Besides winning the blow out game against Madonna 90-43, these saints have struggled to compare.
However, the season had drawn a setback, it is far from over going into the next series of matches in February the Aquinas Women’s Basketball Team plays only conference teams. This provides an opportunity for our saints to make a run still for the conference title. With 5 of the 8 games up against opponents they have already beat, it is no question that it is possible for our saints to continue to compete through the conference tournament!
