Story by Evan Bennett, Guest Writer

This was a great season for the Aquinas Men’s swim and dive team. We almost completely rewrote the record board and really displayed how strong of a team we are. At the Mid season “Don Kimble Invitational”, we had eight new school records set and finished fifth place overall.   The record breaking continued at the KCAC Championship meet with seventeen new records, finishing in third place.

The team brought home top three medals in eight events, the 200 medley relay of Titus Smith, Luke Martin, Evan Hurtado and Mathew Dumbsky took third place, the same four swimmers took second place overall in the 400 free relay. Luke Martin finished second place in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, Evan Hurtado took second place in the 100 backstroke, Ian Clapp took third place in the 200 backstroke, Evan Bennett took first place in the 1 meter diving and second place in the 3 meter diving and Troy Borrero took third place in the 3 meter diving. After the KCAC meet, Evan Hurtado, Luke Martin, Evan Bennett and Troy Borrero kept training for the NAIA National Championships in Columbus Georgia, March 6-9.

“Watching the team grow from our first year to now has been nothing short of amazing. The team grew, records fell, and the wins started rolling in. Coach Kristy has taken the team to new heights backed with the strong work ethic of this team. The team as a whole is fierce, hard working, and courageous. The future is bright for this young Aq swim and dive team, it has been an opportunity of a lifetime to be a part of it.” said Cesar Robles, the men’s team’s sole senior. The team is sad to see Cesar go, as he has been one of the biggest mentors for the team. But we are all excited to see the team grow with the promising recruits we have for next year. “This year has been the most fun throughout the years I’ve been at Aquinas. I’m excited for next year and what it will uphold.” – Christopher Uzunoe-Chin
