On Tuesday, March 5th, at 8pm, Wealthy Theatre partnered with the Grand Rapids Community Media Center to present the movie “Legally Blonde.” About 120 people attended the event; students, community members, families, and those who love the movie. Each ticket was $8.5 on the website, and $10 if you went in person. This small theater had a cozy appeal to it, yet at the same time, the historic building exuded an older flair to it as well.
The hosts presenting the film were very nice and excited at how many people attended. The nonprofit organization, Grand Rapids Community Media Center, has a main focus around helping and promoting access to media and engaging across Grand Rapids. Beginning the event, they had a contest of the “bend and snap” and whoever did the best bend and snap from the Legally Blonde movie won two free tickets to watch any movie for the Wealthy Theater. The winners then won a basket from the boutique near the wealthy street theater.
Four people went up and the crowd went crazy for each person. A girl in a pink top with a blonde pony-tail named Sarah won the contest. After this the movie started, and the atmosphere was celebratory, where people appeared excited to watch the movie.
The film, created in 2001 is a romantic comedy, where the main character Elle Woods (played by Reese Witherspoon), applies to Harvard after being looked down upon as a sorority girl. Themes of self-empowerment, friendship, authenticity, education, and challenging stereotypes are all seen throughout the story. This movie event promotes a perfect example to celebrate and appreciate Women’s History Month.
During specific parts of the film, the audience went crazy. For example, the scene where Jennifer Coolidge’s famous line, “I’m taking the dog dumbass!” people clapped and cheered at her performance. At the end of the movie when Elle Woods got her degree, the audience burst into applause. Overall the reaction to the film was positive, in which community members were able to come together to appreciate a well known film.
The next event being held at Wealthy Theatre is a Social Media Panel, on Tuesday, March 12th at 6:30pm, where experts and creative artists will be there willing to answer questions that individuals may have about digital platforms.
