As summer approaches and the semester draws to an end many are making summer plans. Everyone is trying to figure out where they want to work, connecting with friends, and preparing for final exams. However, there is something looming around the corner waiting for new players: Spikeball. In reality, the summer season should be named Spikeball season, for it is the perfect time of the year to play Spikeball. The cool, soothing breeze, the radiating warmth of the sun, and the sound of the waves are just a few of the many wondrous sensory experiences one can experience when playing Spikeball at the beach.
Spikeball is a very simple game; you hit a ball at a net, yet it contains so much within its very easily portable pieces of equipment. All one needs to play Spikeball is the net, a ball, and a couple of ambitious competitors. This allows for Spikeball to shine. It can be played almost anywhere like in a yard, in the sand, on concrete, and with a floating net it can even be played on water. Although playing in the sand has to be one of the best ways to play the game. The soft sand provides an amazing cushion when diving for the save of a lifetime. Every human has the innate desire to not not let a ball touch the ground when they are challenged, and spikeball is a way to fulfill this intrinsic desire within all of us.
As with all great games, someone new can easily learn the rules and enjoy playing while the competitive players can find joy with advanced tactics and mechanics. Spikeball, of course, has this quality. Granted hand-eye coordination is required if you want to play Spikeball, but you do not need to be an elite level athlete if you want to have a good time playing. If you are that elite athlete, you can have fun too. There are plenty of Spikeball tournaments held during the summer if you have a competitive itch.
As soon as the sun comes out and the school gets out, get some friends together, pitch in together for a spikeball net and ball, and go to a beach and hit a ball against a net. It is really that simple and that enjoyable. Spikeball is the key to a good summer.
