Brand new, might be a bit of a stretch, however lots of changes are coming to Aquinas’ The Saint. First and foremost, it is being run with a near entirely new team of editors headed by new Editor-in-Chief Alex Rodriguez. The Catholic column is making its second annual run while the classics, News, Culture, Arts and Sports, remain the same.
One of the goals The Saint has this year is to move to a typical newspaper format. This means there will be no more of the zine booklets around campus, and instead students, staff and faculty can look forward to perusing through something a little more authentic feeling. The newspaper format is not off the ground yet, however the Aquinas Community should be able to expect it in a few weeks or less depending on Senate budget approval. For now, The Saint will rely on its online publication releasing its articles on Wednesday.
The Saint is also making a call to writers. One of the many challenges in the past has been the column editors being required to write articles for their column instead of only editing the work of other writers on campus. Essentially, this slows the process and causes a very narrow scope of journalism. Previously, editors would write about their sporting events or other Aquinas obligations instead of exploring something new on campus– something I have fallen victim to many times. This year The Saint is making a huge call to writers on campus to please submit articles throughout the semester and their time on campus. By submitting articles you are interested in, you not only assist us with our goal of expanding our journalistic scope, but you also increase reader engagement. As a bonus and to show our appreciation guest writers will also be paid for their submissions if the article is run. The link to submit articles can be found at the bottom of this page.
Another change happening within the writing staff is that there is a growing team of reporters who are regular writers for The Saint but not editors. Helping with the same goals mentioned above. They are responsible for filling in articles or helping in sections as needed and paid per article that they write. Time for a shameless plug! Consider becoming a journalist!
