For many, homecoming is a time for reconnection. This was evident in the massive turnout for the Aquinas College Homecoming Weekend (2024, Sept. 20–21) Numerous faces were seen around campus, including the students at events, the alumni at the sporting matches or faculty hanging at the beer tent.
Ernesto Lopes, 2023 Top Saint and alum, said “The fact that everyone comes from wherever they go after they graduate and that we all get to meet here.” This shows the community that homecoming weekend gets to bring. Having a former Top Saint return from out of the state to be around this eventful environment is exactly the goal.
Knowing the event is planned for alumni, it does not disclude current students as well. Junior Jenna Lee said: “Honestly, just getting to be a part of this year has been really cool because we’ve been traveling for volleyball the past two years.” This comment came after the Aquinas Women’s Volleyball Team had beaten both Defiance and Kyper in a 3-0 match. In a match that made the stands filled with multiple alumni coming out to support the Saints.
There are lots of different reasons to retun to campus during Homecoming. For Dr. Ronald Reeves, the new Athletic Director, “It’s been getting to go to each and every game event, from volleyball, soccer, rugby and I went to watch them.” He continued, “It is just good to see fans everywhere, people everywhere, the alumni, and it has been nothing but a blast.” The energy this homecoming weekend is like no other we see on campus. Almost everyone at Aquinas goes out and supports events.
The community is what it is all about. President Alicia Córdoba said, “The best part of Homecoming is all of you.” In that she continued, “I love the students, the alumni, all of it.”
The true beauty of Homecoming is not only the multiple sporting events, the beer tent, or the food trucks; Homecoming weekend is about Aquinas. Celebrating Aquinas as a whole community. It brings together the past and the present to celebrate the one thing that connects us all: Aquinas is our home.
