On Wednesday, Oct. 23, Campus Ministry hosted a euchre event on the Alksnis balcony. From 3:00-5:00 p.m., teams of four gathered around eight tables that were set up with decks of cards, and they each dealt out a game. There was free food—an assortment of chips, dips and puppy chow—provided by Wege catering.
The event began with Father Jordan and freshman Trista Cridler teamed up against junior Johnny Vanderbaan and freshman Ryan Maddock. Though the game was close, in the end, Vanderbaan and Maddock came out on top. Vanderbaan, Maddock, Fr. Jordan and Cridler were very competitive. Vanderbaan and Maddock were excited to have beaten Fr. Jordan at a game.

Many people have different opinions on whether or not euchre is a fun game to play. Freshman J.T. Doudna didn’t participate in the games and opted to watch instead. “Euchre is all backwards, I don’t like it. The jacks are on top and it doesn’t make sense,” said Doudna.
Many came out to Campus Ministry’s euchre event to seek fellowship, even if not everyone knew how to play or liked euchre. Junior Anna-Marie Comden did not know how to play the game but came to learn more. “It was fun. It was easier than learning it in previous years because I had friends with me,” said Comden.
Junior Ryan Smith came out to enjoy euchre with his friend, junior Anthony Lalomia, because he loves playing the game.
“I love playing euchre and I love Campus Ministry. They advertised this event very well,” said Smith.
Partners Smith and Lalomia ended up winning their first game of euchre at the event.
The secret to their success came from a simple saying. “Turn down a bower, lose for an hour. I live by the golden rule,” said Lalomia.
Though euchre can be controversial, Campus Ministry knew how to bring everyone together and focus on what unites them: a fun game with friends.
