For those who have not yet had the privilege to fly out of Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) recently, they would find it undergoing a constant stream of new and exciting renovations. Just last year, work began on a $156 million rental car facility to combat the increased influx of people visiting, moving, or returning to Grand Rapids. Not only that, they are now looking towards the creation of a new air traffic control tower.
They’re not done yet. On top of these new projects, GRR has wrapped up its completion on the $8.5 million project for their snow removal equipment storage facility. This is to ensure that when the Michigan winters attempt to slow the air traffic into West Michigan, the airport will be more than capable of making sure that flights in and out are on schedule.
More businesses are looking to carve out their spot in the growing airport at Grand Rapids. Bell’s Brewery, a West-Michigan beer company, recently announced their much anticipated return to the airport with a brand new taproom. A local business in the local airport is a much needed welcome mat for someone who may be unfamiliar with West Michigan’s beer, culture and lifestyle.
Though the Gerald R. Ford Airport might be Michigan’s second busiest airport, it also aims to be one of the most inclusive with its new Sensory Room. Its design aims to soothe travelers who have sensory disorders before their flight or for first time flyers who may be anxious or suffer from anxiety. It has three zones in the room; The Respite Zone where flyers calm down and relax before their flight, The Active Zone which prepares those about to depart with senses of light and touch in air travel, and finally The Simulation Zone designed to assist people to familiarize themselves with the boarding process. Whether a first time flier or a person with sensory issues, Gerald R Ford International Airport has worked hard to be an inclusive and accommodating airport.
The amount of work, expenses, and development at the local airport is not only a testament to the growth of Grand Rapids and West Michigan as whole, but it is also a message to the welcoming community that the arrivals are about to encounter. From the beautiful murals painted by local artists on the walls, to the local beer they can enjoy, the ease of rental cars and parking, and the sensory room for inclusivity. The welcome improvements show the spirit of Pure Michigan to all departing or arriving.
