On Tuesday, Dec. 3, Aquinas celebrated its annual Tree Lighting, hosted by Campus Ministry and SAO. The tree, a small pine located between Holmdene and the Chapel, was decorated with yellow Christmas lights and a small ceremony was celebrated before the lights were plugged in.

Mike Ingram, Campus Ministry director, opened the ceremony by introducing the tradition and the tree, which was donated by Student Senate in 2010 and continues as an annual tradition during Advent to this day.

Father Bob gave a blessing to the tree and expressed that it would remain a sign of joy and peace that fills hearts throughout the year. President Cordoba also gave a few words about how the idea of tree lighting is modern but it represents a Christmas candle that acts as the light to the world, as Christ was. After a countdown from three, Pres. Cordoba and Student Senate representative, Fiona Walsh, plugged in the lights and illuminated the tree. Once the lights were lit, the Aquinas Choir sang “Deck the Halls,” “O Christmas Tree,” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

“It’s such a wholesome tradition because it just brings our small community together,” said senior Abigail Vallance. Over 30 people attended the event in total.

Outside of Holmdene, birdhouses could be made to hang on the newly lit tree as well. The lighting heralded in the Advent season and the coming Christmas joy was shared in Holmdene’s hall among faculty, staff, and students alike.

After the ceremony, Ingram reflected on the event. “It was great to see everyone who attended enjoying their time together and becoming a part of the proud tradition and long standing legacy of AQ tree lightings. A special thanks to everyone who helped make the event such a great success,” said Ingram.

The program continued at Holmdene, where SAO was offering their annual Stocking Stuffer event. “It’s a good event to see a lot of great people and I like how everyone can come together over the holidays and enjoy some stocking stuffers and treats,” said senior Gabe Hay. Cookies, hot chocolate, and candy canes were also provided.
