On Wednesday, Dec. 4, the Writer’s Guild collaborated with the Multicultural club to host an event for students to have a fun study session before the week of exams. The Multicultural Club wanted to offer students a brain break for their last event of the year. They gave it an alliterative title of Brain Break Bracelets and Boba.
The boba was bought from Hoshi Hoshi, a local Grand Rapids bubble tea business. A variety of flavors were offered, as to hopefully appease as many students looking for a studying respite as possible.

At the same time, the Writer’s Guild wanted to create an environment where students could write alongside one another and ask for peer feedback if they needed. The concept was to motivate students by surrounding them with people with the same goals. Additionally, it brought students closer to the resource of peer editing. They reserved the Upper Moose originally to have a more quiet studying environment.
“We just wanted to do something really fun and simple and we figured students would need the time to get homework done,” said Sophia Lentine, president of the Writer’s Guild.

When Hannah Bechtold, the staff advisor for the Multicultural Club, went to reserve the Moose, she noticed the Writer’s Guild event happening at the same time. “I reached out to the Writer’s Guild,” said Bechtold. Right away, both RSO’s were excited about the collaboration.
“I’m so glad that people could come together and work on their papers, but also take the time to be creative,” said Bechtold, referencing the origami and bracelet making materials the multicultural club provided. “It is important to balance the academic with the creative side, especially for mental health,” said Betchel.
“It was an absolute joy to work with the multicultural club to raise awareness for both clubs,” said Laura Standle, member of the Writer’s Guild.
The event had huge success drawing students from all over campus to eat pizza, complete their homework and have fun together.
