The Writing Center serves the Aquinas community in all matters of writing. Students, professors, faculty, and alumni frequently utilize the center with professors often requiring their students to visit the Writing Center during the semester for help with their writing assignments.
“Our Writing Center is here to serve our entire community of writers,” said Writing Center Coordinator Julie Bevins. “Everybody writes, and everybody benefits from intelligent feedback.”
Consultations are available by appointment at the Writing Center’s website or as walk-ins. They run as one-on-one consultation sessions with the option of group sessions. Walk-in hours are available in the evenings on Mondays through Wednesdays from 6-8p.m..
One new change to the Writing Center this semester is a new punch card initiative entitled The Writing Center Punch Card: You Otter Write with Us!
Grace Wilson, Task Force Administrator for the Writing Center, explained the new system: “Each student who comes to the WC will be entered into a raffle and have the possibility to win prizes at the end of the year. On your first visit, you will automatically receive 5 entries into the raffle. Once you hit 6 visits, you will gain another two entries. 7 visits will gain you another two entries, and at your 8th visit you will gain another extra 5 entries.”
Every visit will be recorded on a punch card and stored in the Writing Center. Each visit earns a stamp modeled after the Writing Center mascot, Odin the Otter.
The Writing Center has also found a new location this school year, moving from its previous spot inside the Grace Hauenstein Library near the circulation desk. Writers can now find the center’s new base of operations on the second floor of the same building in JLH 230.
“Much of what we do involves asking questions and listening attentively to our writers,” Bevins explained. “Our new Writing Center location and hours are a result of listening to what our writing community needs.”
The new Writing Center location gives a designated space for trained consultants to work with clients. The goal of the new location was to create a more welcoming environment for all writers.
“Writers have told us many times over the years what sorts of environments help them be at their best,” Bevins said, “and we continue to try and meet their needs.”
