Around 12:45 a.m. on Friday March 28, an adult male was driving down East Fulton St. and Alten Ave. NE just across from Sturrus, when a motor vehicle collided with
the tree at a high velocity. The man was taken to the local hospital where he was
pronounced dead.
This tragedy presents itself after Michigan had experienced a sharp decline in traffic
fatalities in 2024 as opposed to previous years. To echo the Michigan government’s
safe driving tips, all drivers should avoid tailgating, drive the posted speed limit, drivewith a seatbelt, avoid driving when fatigued or intoxicated, avoid distractions such as cell phones and to obey all laws on the state and federal level. It is encouraged to also partake in defensive driving courses if one has such disposable income, as it makes
not only the driver safer but those around them.
Of primary concerns to Aquinas students was the lack of campus communication
about the event.
“I feel like the college should at least notify students,” said student Atlan Lasher.
“What if a student had seen it happen? That could have been really traumatic.”
Another student with classes in Sturrus shared similar concerns. “I had no
idea it even happened,” said junior Kaitlyn Santaguida. “It would have been
nice to receive some kind of communication, especially one assuring us
that no students were involved or harmed.”
