As spring begins to blossom, visitors are flocking to John Ball Zoo for the annual  Lantern Festival, an experience that transforms the zoo into a trail of illuminated mythological animals and wildlife. Presented by Meijer in partnership with Tianyu Arts & Culture, the event opened April 9 and will continue receiving visitors through June 15.

Now in its third year, the festival features a one-mile walk through the zoo illuminated by over 50 handcrafted Chinese lanterns, each expertly designed and lit with LEDs. The displays also serve as storytelling pieces that intertwine wildlife with Asian folklore and mythology.

“This year is completely different,” said Matt, a zookeeper and staff member that was working at the event. Compared to the last lantern festival there are sections themed around traditional Chinese art, mythical creatures, and lush jungle and rainforest scenes. Making it a whole new experience for anyone who visited last year.

The lanterns are designed by Tianyu Arts & Culture, Inc. Who specialise in light and lantern festivals across the country, the event includes not only static displays but also animated lanterns and interactive LED screens.

The festival runs nightly from 7:30-11:30 P.M., after regular zoo hours. While the animal exhibits are not accessible during the event, live entertainment takes center stage. Each evening features three cultural performances at 8:15, 9:00, and 10:00 p.m., showcasing acts such as Chinese face-changing, spinning plate artists, and acrobatic displays. On select nights, local performers from the Grand Rapids area also join the lineup.

“Last year, we had around 5,500 people come through each night,” said the zookeeper. “It’s a very popular event, but we do remind guests that the animals are resting during these hours and may be disturbed by the lights and sounds.”

To accommodate the high volume of attendees, John Ball Zoo’s website says that “visitors are encouraged to carpool or use ride-sharing services,” as “parking is limited.”

Ticket prices range depending on the day: Tuesday through Thursday are $19 for zoo members, $22 for non-members and Friday through Sunday are $23 for members, $26 for non-members

The full walk through the festival takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, offering ample time to enjoy the lights, watch a show, and grab some food. Hot food and drinks are available for purchase throughout the evening at the zoo.

With warmer evenings students have just over one month if they want to enjoy this unique lantern experience, the only one of its kind in Michigan.
