Students gathered from 6-9 p.m. in the Regina Bowl for Student Senate’s first ever Welcome Week event geared towards students. “This is our first time ever doing anything like this, and it has already exceeded expectations,” said Grant Bricking, chair of Student Senate.

Student senate could be found welcoming students to the event at the first of three tables. Other RSO’s present at the event were AQ Pride and Rank MI Vote.

Set up in the Regina Bowl were an assortment of yard games including Spike Ball, Can Jam, cornhole and cups. Music was set up on a speaker in the basketball court as well as a portable campfire overseen by Campus Ministry director, Mike Ingrahm, where students could make s’mores.

Dinner was set up above the stairs. Students were able to enjoy hamburgers with corn on the cob and macaroni and cheese. There was a black bean vegetarian option for the burgers, and at the end of the table there were s’more ingredients for dessert.

The event was not specifically geared towards freshmen, but rather was designed to bring all students together at the end of the first week of classes. This being said, many first years were grateful for the opportunity to meet new people. “I love that everyone can meet up here, meet new people, and have their own fun before things get serious,” said freshman Elizabeth Bruso. “It’s really nice that there is something for everyone here.”

Returning students also had a great time participating in the yard games. “I had so much fun playing Spike Ball,” said sophomore Jorge Morales.

“All and all, I can’t believe how well the event turned out,” said senate member Taylor Moss.
