On Dec. 7, Campus ministry held a candlelight mass and their final after-mass social event for the semester.

Candlelight masses, or a Rorate Mass, are typically held on Saturday nights throughout Advent in preparation for Christmas. The mass is also celebrated in honor of Blessed Virgin Mary and is symbolic as Mary is often called the morning star.

Besides the lights being off and the only source of light being from the many candles scattered throughout the chapel, incense was also used in the service.

Sophomore Xavier Memjie shared that he really enjoyed the mass and liked the overall atmosphere. “It was like any other mass, however, there were some more special aspects to it,” Memjie said. “Such as the use of the incense, as well as it being more reverent overall. I wish that more churches did stuff that way…especially with how the lights are dimmed, because I think that it creates a very reverent atmosphere.”

After mass, everyone was invited to gather on the first floor of the academic building for a game of hide and seek.

When asked about the after-mass social, Logan Licence shared that he loved it and thought that it added some new and different elements for the social-goers compared to what campus ministry typically plans.

“I hope for the same stuff like ultimate frisbee and soccer,” Licence said when adding what he would like to see campus ministry include next semester. “But also I would be down to do new things just like hide and seek. Also football, I want that.”

Weekday masses will still be held throughout exam week with the last mass being celebrated Friday, Dec. 12.
