Saturday, Jan. 21 Aquinas College held the second and final Spectrum Scholarship Competition of the year. This was the 33 year of the competition that rewards one Full Tuition scholarship and a Standard Room Scholarship. The competition is open to all admitted students prior to their freshman year and all have the chance to win a 500 dollar renewable scholarship just for competing.

“I am not really nervous,” said Maria George, a prospective student who competed in the competition. “I have been really excited and looking forward to the competition.”

The competition is broken up into two competition sections both lasting 45 minutes with a third non-graded section. The non-graded section was a community service project where the participants would draw or write inspirational quotes on lunch sacks for the local community. This time also served as the second reason for the competition, to start building a community. The competition brings together people from all across the state of Michigan and beyond and is the first time prospective students can start to build friendships that will last far longer than their four years at Aquinas.

The competition also has a written essay and group problem solving section that are used to grade the competition.

Spectrum also offers a time for the parents to ask a group of faculty and students any questions they have pertaining to Aquinas along with a tour of campus and a complementary meal at Wege.

“The first time I took a tour I thought [the school] was too small,” said George. “But now it seems bigger and I am very happy at the size of the school.” After the competition the students and their families are invited to join a reception.

The winner will be announced in March and will be offered direct admission to the Insignis Honors Program.
