Aquinas College was recently closed on Jan. 20, 23 and 27. The snow and below freezing temperatures made for the perfect storm, causing classes and campus activities to cancel.

Students had different approaches to spending the unexpected frenzy of snow days. Some students cozied up inside where it was warm while others still had work to push through for school.

What professors decided to provide their classes with in terms of work and attendance was completely dependent on them. Professors could still hold classes virtually if they chose, and they could give assignments in lieu of not having any class time.

Freshman Saige Baldwin locked in on the snow days to get through the work her professors still required of her, despite the class cancelations. “I was still given work to do, so I stayed in and completed those assignments,” Baldwin said.

Other students took the snow days as an opportunity to rest and stay out of the near minus ten degree temperatures, which many news outlets reported could cause frostbite within the first few minutes of exposure.

“My favorite snow day activity would probably be just staying in with hot chocolate and watching movies with friends, and that’s what I did,” freshman Alisha Lynch said.

Another student took a balanced approach. “On the snow days I slept in, did a little homework and spent time with my teammates and friends,” junior Dillon Wieschhorster said.

No matter what students decided to do with their snow days, the three days off certainly gave commuters a break from being on the icy roads and gave students a moment to themselves. Feb. is already shaping up to be a much warmer side of winter with temperatures in the 30s and 40s, but a snow day is never out of the question in Grand Rapids.
