On Jan. 29, Student Senate met in Upper Donnelly Center for their first meeting of the year.
The meeting was called to order by Senate Chair Grant Bricking at 12:18 p.m. To begin, writers from The Saint, the campus newspaper, briefly introduced themselves for a Q and A. Members of the Senate were free to ask any questions they wanted. Many of the first questions asked were about logistics and how the paper is run. These included questions about how the work is regulated amongst reporters and editors, how reporters are paid, and how weekly meetings work. Later, there was discussion about the paper’s status as an RSO and the paper copies that are disturbed throughout campus.
The next order of business was the “Spruce the Moose” discussion with Dean of Students Alicia Lloyd. Senate wanted to ask about office space in the Cook Carriage House and if they could make use of it. Alicia clarified that all RSOs had access to the far room in the upper Moose, but that Senate permanently owning the room was a different conversation. She advised them to look at the situation, figure out what they want, and communicate effectively.
The final order of business was an update on Red Flags submissions. Red Flags is a Google Forum that anyone can fill out with concerns about campus. Bricking said that there were 26 responses to the forum last week, 15 of which were on snow removal. These were primarily complaints about how the removal company operated. Other submissions included a detailed account of how shortened hours at the Moose affected an anonymous commuting student and two responses about the limited caffeine choices on campus.
After the Red Flags discussion concluded, there was a brief reminder about students having to move their vehicles for the upcoming snow removals happening on campus, including the penalties of a $100 ticket and towing expenses if they failed to do so.
With all topics of discussion exhausted, the meeting was adjourned at 1:20 p.m.
