Last May, Aquinas College announced three new Computer Technology majors: Artificial Intelligence (AI) literacy, Cybersecurity and Esports and Gaming Administration. The courses for each of these majors are currently being offered in a combination of in person and online formats.

The Artificial Intelligence Literacy major educates students on the technology, including its use, implications and ethics. The major intends to teach participants on how to knowledgeably utilize the technology.
The cybersecurity major teaches students how to infiltrate a system and how this knowledge can protect people. This knowledge is grounded in ethical and philosophical principles within the courses.
The Esports and Gaming Administration major focuses on the esports industry and its recent growth and popularity. Students learn how to foster healthy and nondiscriminatory gaming communities.
Aquinas cited the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on the increased impact AI technology will have from 2024-2034 to educate people on the decision to add these majors. Their website says that the “… new programs reflect Aquinas College’s commitment to preparing students for the rapidly evolving job market while keeping them rooted in prayer, service and community.”
Later that month, Sr. Maureen R. Geary, O.P., the president of Aquinas, sent out a message to the community entitled “Aquinas, AI and Magnifica Humanitas.” The message focuses on Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical on AI technology while describing how its ideas intersect with the Aquinas community.
Sr. Maureen says that “Aquinas graduates will enter a world rapidly reshaped by AI, competing alongside the technology, working within it and helping govern it.” The letter concludes by affirming how she will continue to ponder the moral implications of Artificial Intelligence and invites the community to join her in doing so.
