On Monday Oct. 5, the math club held a pizza and midterms prep event in the Grace Hauenstein library at 7 p.m.

The math club’s E-Board planned this event to be an opportunity for students to come and fuel up with some pizza and soda as well as get math tutoring from any of the members of the club. The E-Board consists of members Haris Sendijarevic as president, Andrew Moody as Vice President, Jaben Bakker as Treasury and Bon Mate as Secretary.

The board took some time trying to figure out the plan for this event. “It was sort of tricky because we wanted to help.” Mate said. “There was midterms coming up so we were like, okay, what should we do? And so [we figured] we should put on an event for people to come get help, study and prepare for the midterms.”

Many of the people gathered at the event were athletes, specifically from the track team including junior Issac Boire. Boire heard about the event from Mate as the two are both on the same team and although Boire did not have any math classes that he needed tutoring in, he still came to support and grab some pizza.

The people within the math club hope to make the world of math a lot less scary for students.

“I know math is a scary word,” senior Haris Sendijarevic said. “And people don’t like coming to math events, but we are fun and cool guys, you know, we just want to share the love of what math is, you know?”

The math club has put on other events, both fun and educational, including problems and kebabs where students could solve math problems in order to get a kebab, holding presentations for students who completed the Mohler-Thompson Summer Research Grant and their final exams prep event.

The math club’s next event will be their Mohler-Thompson summer research presentation in Albertus Magnus Hall early November.
