Nellie’s Corner– commonly known as “The Corner”– is a popular food spot on campus, and one that many students rely on when the dining hall is closed. Open 7-10 p.m., Monday-Thursday, The Corner offers many options on its menu including chicken tenders, chicken sandwiches, burgers, quesadillas and breakfast bowls.

Such an influx of students on the daily can lead to some issues, the most concerning of those being an increase in wait times. Wait times depend on multiple factors including available staff, the number of customers and the type of food items ordered.

“I used to work there last year,” sophomore Hailey Hooker said. “The grill items typically do take longer just because it can only do so many items at once and we only have the one grill, so especially when we have multiple grilled items at once it can take slightly longer.”

Items made on the grill include the breakfast bowl and quesadillas. According to Hooker, many athletes tend to order the breakfast bowl, so if a lot of athletes wanting bowls come in at once, there’s a high probability that the wait time will climb.

Many students have had to deal with long wait times over the past few weeks. On Thursday, Sept. 24, for example, the wait time increased to 25 minutes after multiple grill items were ordered.

Students have been understanding, though. The food is made on the spot, and there is always bound to be some amount of time to wait.

“It is the price you pay for food made fresh,” senior Michaela Faith said.

The factor of staffing is important to consider as well. The more hands to make the food, the quicker the food can get out. On a typical night, there are anywhere between three to five employees on the floor.

“Over the past few weeks, I understand they’ve been short staffed,” sophomore Joseph Treadwell said. “They’ll for sure decrease in wait times as people are trained.”

Nellie’s Corner is always accepting comments and suggestions on the Aquinas website. The still-fresh addition to campus is always looking for ways to improve and establish its presence as one of the leading hangout places on campus.
