On Friday morning, Oct. 16, 2026, a Security Officer at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Allendale. A student at the university was taken into custody following the incident. The deceased was a third-party who was contracted by the university.

The death follows new rules imposed on GVSU’s campus that lead to an increased presence of security. Earlier this month, public access to the campus was barred from outsiders from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.Thursday through Saturday following multiple incidents, including a firearm being brought into a dorm room by a non-student who allegedly also made a threat. Disciplinary action was taken against multiple people by GVSU in response to these events.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the victim, who was working on our campus to help keep our community safe,” Philomena Mantella, Grand Valley State University President, in a statement said.

All of the GVSU students interviewed by WOOD-TV had “no knowledge of this accident.”

The investigation is still underway.
