The Aquinas men’s lacrosse team is riding high after practicing throughout the fall. The team was originally scheduled for a homecoming match, but instead decided to do an intrasquad scrimmage. This scrimmage not only gave the players a chance to build chemistry with each other, but it also allowed them the opportunity to see what else they needed to work on.
The team has started off the year with nothing but scrimmages. Their first scrimmage of the year was a white vs red intrasquad battle. It was a hard fought battle with the white team winning by a score of six to five. The scrimmage only intensified the desire for new first-year lacrosse players to get out there and play.
“I think that Aquinas lacrosse has been stepped up. It’s much more intense. Everyone’s very dedicated and excited for the upcoming season,” said first-year Quentin Johnson. “Men’s lacrosse kicks off in February, and is going to be the best year yet.”
Their second scrimmage of the year took place against the alumni during homecoming weekend and it was a chance for the newer players to meet previous players.
This year’s team has a lot of new faces and with that, head coach Doug Seites has been working with the them to get them ready for the season. Notable first-year’s include: Dan Diederich, Nick McConkey, Colton Foley, Neil Panega, Joey Krause, Corby Haley, Tyson Marsh, Kevin Hieshetter, Quentin Johnson, Josh Dillon, Mack Baker, John Zappia, Sam Klinsky, and Matthew Smotrilla.
Leading the team in goals last year was Grant Holloway. Jake Auyer and Holloway both shared the team lead in points with 33. Leading the team last year in goals against average was goalie Jimmy Watt. Watt has led the team in this category since the 2012 season. Former players Watt and Mitch Ringer are in their first year as student assistants. With their roles, they will be tasked with developing the incoming class to ensure a winning tradition is continued.
The team has a few more scrimmages before they go into their winter training. Their next games include scrimmages against Hope and Calvin on October 17, with start times of 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. These games will take place on Calvin’s campus. After the winter, the team will begin its regular season during the spring.
