With the first three games of the regular season in the books, it’s safe to say the Aquinas College community should be ready for a fun and exciting Men’s Basketball season.
The squad headed out for their first weekend of play on October 30 in Marion, Indiana, starting their season off the right way by beating Spring Arbor University 85-84. The leading scorer on the day was senior Zac VanBeek, who racked up 23 points, with senior Jacob Bullock right behind him with 22 points and 4 assists.
In the second and last game of the weekend, the guys fell to Indiana Wesleyan by a score of 84-70. Bullock led the scoring in this game with 23 points, followed by junior Ryan Schall with 13.
On Wednesday, November 4, the Saints fell to Rochester College by a score of 68-55. Senior forward Bryan Mitzner led the team with 14 points, with senior Loren Johnson chipping in 11 and VanBeek racking up 10.
The Saints bring to the table a unique squad this season, with key veteran players such as Bullock, Vanbeek, Mitzner and Schall, as well as senior Kail Venema. They also bring in many fresh faces, including first-year Rashaud Orange and TJ Hunter.
“As a [first-year] I’m still adjusting to everything in terms of the speed of the game and what my coaches are asking of me, but I am confident that by the end of the season our team will be on top,” Hunter said.
Bullock believes that the new members of the team are going to play a huge role in the success that they have this year.
“Our newcomers will play a significant role in our season. We are still waiting to get Rashaud Orange back from injury and he will also play a major role in our success this year.”
The squad has a pretty busy season ahead of them, having played three games already and being slated to play another 27 games and a tournament. They are ready to take on this challenge, however.
“I feel like we’re ready,” Hunter said. “There are always little things we can improve on but we’re just taking it one game at a time.”
“I’m looking forward to a good year and for us to compete in the league,” Bullock also commented.
Be sure to come support the guys as they compete in their home opener on Wednesday, November 18 at 8 p.m. against Lawrence Tech.
