With the 2015-2016 season winding down, the Saints are looking to end their basketball season with a bang; including trying to make it into the WHAC tournament.

With 4 games to go in the season, the team is 7-18 overall with a 6-12 WHAC record. The remainder of the season is crucial for the Saints in order to make it to the WHAC tournament. With all the remaining games being against fellow WHAC teams, each and every game counts.

In the remaining games, the Saints will go up against Siena Heights, Davenport, Marygrove, and UM Dearborn. In order to make the tournament, the ladies have to be in the top 8 in the WHAC. There are 12 teams total in the conference, and currently the team is in the 9 spot.

Although the Lady Saints had a rough start to their season, they have been steadily improving game by game, and thanks to that are in the playoff hunt.

When asked how the team has done thus far this season, sophomore forward/center Mary Vojtko said “From the beginning of the season we’ve improved a lot, especially with the execution of our offense and communication.”

Another thing that most fans don’t realize about this team is how young it is compared to the other teams in the conference. The Lady Saints have a total of six first-years, five sophomores and one junior on their team, not having any seniors for this season. Although this could be seen as a disadvantage to some people, this is definitely a very positive thing for the women’s basketball program.

“This was a huge building year for our program,” Vojtko said. “The next two years will be great because by then we will have great team chemistry.”

For those that have gone and watched a game, it is evident that this team is building its chemistry, and as the ladies get more accustomed to playing with each other they could very well become a team that other WHAC members will want to watch out for.

While it is exciting to think about what the future looks like for the team, it will also be exciting to see what the coming weeks have in store for the team. So, if anyone has time and wants to watch some Aquinas Women’s basketball, come to Sturrus on Saturday, February 16, starting at 1 p.m. Come on out and support your Lady Saints!
