The Aquinas men’s basketball team starts their season on Oct. 27 against Spring Arbor University. Last year, the team was very successful and even made it to nationals.
“The biggest achievement for the team last year was coming together, facing adversity and winning the games we needed to win to eventually make it to Nationals,” Adrian Atwater, who’s in his third year on the team, said. “Anytime we have the opportunity to make it to Nationals we have achieved something special in the opportunity to distinguish ourselves on a national stage as one of, if not the best, team in the country.”
The Saints are looking to carry what was learned last season into this season and the future seasons.
“The biggest possible goal for the team to achieve will be to go back to the tournament in the future and win, become national champions,” Atwater said. “Even more futuristic, it would be to establish a successful program on and off the court. Establishing a legacy here at AQ, a reputation that Aquinas men’s basketball is exceptionally hard working on all fronts and prepared to take that reputation of success into future careers and relationships.”
Aquinas College is also welcoming a new Junior Varsity (JV) basketball team this season. The JV team is an opportunity for players to tone their skills before advancing to the varsity program, which will help the team continue to be the best they can be.
One of the players joining the JV team is an international student from Montenegro, Branko Davidovic. “I expect dedication of my teammates and myself to have good chemistry and work ethic,” Davidovic said. “We want to grow together as a team and have a successful season.”
The JV team’s season will begin Nov. 2 against Grand Rapids Community College. Here’s to another great season for our varsity boys and a great inaugural season for the JV team.
