Despite a defeat to Indiana Institute of Technology at the start of the year, Aquinas Women’s Basketball have carried on where they left off before the holidays and are on a seven game win streak this year.
The Saints recovered from their conference defeat to the #6 ranked Indiana to defeat UNOH 76-67 at the Sturrus Center. A great win was highlighted by Michaela Faber, Carley Andrews, Hannah Brefeld and Bri Spica all reaching double digits on the night.
Aquinas backed up the victory with a non-conference beat down off Olivet College. AQ won the game in a convincing manner, taking it 85-47. Spica and Faber again were the big scorers for the hosts as they prepared for a line of vital conference games.
It couldn’t have been much tighter as Aquinas battled to a decisive victory against Lawrence Tech. at Southfield. An incredible match resulted in Aquinas taking the victory on a 53-51 scoreline. Brefeld was the star of the show as she netted 16 points but they relied on a basket from Faber with just five seconds remaining to take the victory.
The next game saw the Saints close out a 79-58 victory at home to Lourdes. Brefeld, again, was at the forefront of the action, scoring 23 points in a vital victory. The Saints backed this win up with a destruction of Cornerstone. AQ took the game 73-39 with five players scoring double digits for Aquinas.
The Saints made it six wins on the bounce after defeating Concordia at the Sturrus Center. AQ closed out a 73-55 victory to seal the win and send them into a showdown with Siena Heights in confident form. They didn’t disappoint; defeating the twentieth ranked side 63-55 on their own patch. Brefeld and Faber again stood out for Aquinas as the scored 20 and 16 points, respectively.
It doesn’t get any easier for Aquinas, they face six vital conference games in the next few weeks which will shape their season. If they continue on the same form, the outlook is positive for a favorable draw in the WHAC tournament.
